I started my journey rated 2203 Rapid. I spent my time training in a few ways:
1. I read annotated grandmaster games from books like "Paul Morphy: Move by Move" and Alekhine's "My Best Games of Chess".
2. I played 15 | 10 Rated Rapid games and would compile them into a study folder and annotate and analyze the game with no computer.
3. I read Euwe and Kramer's "The Middle Game" (Sections of Part 1 and Part 2).
I tried to focus most of my time on playing and analyzing and then about every other day I would read from "The Middle Game" or go over an Annotated master's game. Well, after accumulating about 50 games in my study I am now rated 2186! I got weaker.
I recently read Chess for Zebras and the author suggests that adults are spending too much time on positional manuals and what not instead of grinding their skills (tactics, calculation, positional puzzles, etc.). I don't know what else to do, so I have cracked open some puzzle books (Imagination in chess by Gaprindashvili and Positional Play by Aagaard) and I just set up positions on the board and walk by and solve them at various points in the day. I really feel lost because I thought I was doing the right thing to get better.
Thank you for your input, Kostya. I'll try to integrate your suggestions by playing longer games and working on calculation. I actually own the Calculation book from GM Aagaard! I might work on that next. I really like working on chess and I hope I can break through and start seeing some solid progress again.
