Woodpecker Guide

If you are reading ‘The Woodpecker Method’ (TWM), or hoping to use the method on a different set of puzzles, please follow these key guidelines:

  1. Make sure to read all instructions from TWM before starting on the puzzles.

  2. In short, the method works as follows:

    1. Solve puzzles from TWM (or another source) for 4 weeks. Keep track of how many you do.

    2. At the end of 4 weeks, the # of puzzles you’ve completed is your “set” of puzzles.

    3. The idea of TWM is to re-do your “set” multiple times, going through the set faster and more accurately each time.

    4. 1st time takes 4 weeks, after that, re-do the same set of puzzles in 2 weeks

    5. Continue doing the same “set” of puzzles in half the time, i.e. 1 week, 3-4 days, 2 days, until you can complete the entire set of puzzles in 1 day

    6. Every time you do a set, make sure to solve the problems in full. Don’t just try to remember the first move, input it, and then go from there. Solve the puzzle from the beginning, every time. If you remember the full solution from earlier and it only takes you a second, that’s fine.

    7. If you just want to solve puzzles from TWM without following the method, that’s fine! They are good puzzles that can be used for regular tactics training.

FAQ:

How many puzzles should I solve in the 4 weeks?

  • However many you can! A good pace would be 45-60 minutes a day, 5-7 days a week.
